But to each one of us1 grace2 has been given3 as Christ apportioned it.
This is why ita says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives4 in his train and gave gifts to men."b59
(What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regionsc ?
He who descended is the very one who ascended6 higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)711
It was he who gave8 some to be apostles,9 some to be prophets,10 some to be evangelists,11 and some to be pastors and teachers,1212
to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ13 may be built up1413
until we all reach unity15 in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God16 and become mature,17 attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.1814
Then we will no longer be infants,19 tossed back and forth by the waves,20 and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.2115
Instead, speaking the truth in love,22 we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head,23 that is, Christ.
From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows24 and builds itself up25 in love,26 as each part does its work.
