As you come to him, a living stone 1rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,
52you yourselves like living stones are being built up as 3a spiritual house, to be 4a holy priesthood, 5to offer spiritual sacrifices 6acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
For it stands in Scripture: 7"Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, 8and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame."
So the honor is for you who 9believe, but for those who 10do not believe, 11"The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,"a8
and 12"A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense."They stumble because they disobey the word, 13as they were destined to do.
But you are 14a chosen race, 15a royal 16priesthood, 17a holy nation, 18a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you 19out of darkness into 20his marvelous light.
1021Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Beloved, I urge you 22as sojourners and exiles 23to abstain from the passions of the flesh, 24which wage war against your soul.
1225Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, 26they may see your good deeds and glorify God on 27the day of visitation.
1328Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution,b whether it be to the emperorc as supreme,
or to governors as sent by him 29to punish those who do evil and 30to praise those who do good.
