For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth 1was formed out of water and through water 2by the word of God,
and that by means of these the world that then existed 3was deluged with water and 4perished.
But by the same word 5the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and 6destruction of the ungodly.
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and 7a thousand years as one day.
98The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise 9as some count slowness, but 10is patient toward you,a11 not wishing that any should perish, but 12that all should reach repentance.
But 13the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then 14the heavens will pass away with a roar, and 15the heavenly bodiesb will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.c11
Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, 16what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
1217waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and 18the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!
But according to his promise we are waiting for 19new heavens and a new earth 20in which righteousness dwells.
1421Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him 22without spot or 23blemish, and 24at peace.
And count 25the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as 26our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you 27according to the wisdom given him,
