Prophecy Against Mount Seir

1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 1"Son of man, 2set your face 3against 4Mount Seir, and prophesy against it,
3 and say to it, Thus says the Lord GOD: 5Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and 6I will stretch out my hand against you, 7and I will make you a desolation and a waste.
4 8I will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the LORD.
5 Because 9you cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword 10at the time of their calamity, 11at the time of their final punishment,
6 therefore, 12as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; 13because you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you.
7 14I will make Mount Seir a waste 15and a desolation, and I will cut off from it 16all who come and go.
8 And I will fill 17its mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all 18your ravines 19those slain with the sword shall fall.
9 20I will make you a perpetual desolation, and 21your cities shall not be inhabited. Then 22you will know that I am the LORD.
10 "Because you said, 23'These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and 24we will take possession of them'--although the 25LORD was there--
11 therefore, 26as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will deal with you 27according to the anger and 28envy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And 29I will make myself known among them, when I judge you.
12 And you shall know that I am the LORD. 30"I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, 'They are laid desolate; 31they are given us to devour.'
13 And 32you magnified yourselves against me 33with your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it.
14 Thus says the Lord GOD: 34While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.
15 As you 35rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, 36Mount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then 37they will know that I am the LORD.

Ezekiel 35 Commentary

Chapter 35

A prophecy against Edom.

Verses 1-9 All who have God against them, have the word of God against them. Those that have a constant hatred to God and his people, as the carnal mind has, can only expect to be made desolate for ever.

Verses 10-15 When we see the vanity of the world in the disappointments, losses, and crosses, which others meet with, instead of showing ourselves greedy of worldly things, we should sit more loose to them. In the multitude of words, not one is unknown to God; not the most idle word; and the most daring is not above his rebuke. In the destruction of the enemies of the church, God designs his own glory; and we may be sure that he will not come short of his design. And when the fulness of the Jews and Gentiles shall come into the church, all antichristian opposers shall be destroyed.
