Jeremiah 44:3-13

3 because of the evil that they committed, 1provoking me to anger, 2in that they went to make offerings 3and serve other gods that they knew not, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers.
4 4Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, 'Oh, do not do this abomination that I hate!'
5 5But they did not listen 6or incline their ear, to turn from their evil and make no offerings to other gods.
6 7Therefore my wrath and my anger were poured out and kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, 8and they became a waste and a desolation, as at this day.
7 And now thus says the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you commit this great evil 9against yourselves, to cut off from you 10man and woman, 11infant and child, from the midst of Judah, leaving you no remnant?
8 12Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, 13making offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to live, so that you may be cut off and become 14a curse and a taunt among all the nations of the earth?
9 Have you forgotten the evil of your fathers, 15the evil of the kings of Judah, 16the evil of their[a] wives, your own evil, 17and the evil of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
10 They have not humbled themselves even to this day, 18nor have they feared, nor walked in my law and my statutes that I set before you and before your fathers.
11 "Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: 19Behold, I will set my face against you for harm, to cut off all Judah.
12 I will take the remnant of Judah who have 20set their faces to come to the land of Egypt to live, and they shall all be consumed. 21In the land of Egypt they shall fall; by the sword and by famine 22they shall be consumed. 23From the least to the greatest, they shall die by the sword and by famine, 24and they shall become an oath, a horror, 25a curse, and a taunt.
13 26I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence,

Jeremiah 44:3-13 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 44

This chapter contains a sermon of Jeremiah's to the Jews in Egypt, reproving them for their idolatry there; their answer to it, expressing their resolution to continue in their idolatrous practices; and a denunciation of judgments upon them, of which a sign is given. The sermon begins with observing to them the destruction of Jerusalem, and the causes of it, idolatry and contempt of the prophets, Jer 44:1-6; then follows an expostulation with the present Jews for doing the same things, and exposing themselves and their posterity to the same punishment, Jer 44:7-10; upon which they are threatened with the sore judgments of God that should come upon them, and cut them off in general, Jer 44:11-14; yet such were the impudence and obstinacy of this people, that they declared they would not hearken to the prophet, but persist in their idolatry; it having been better with them when they practised it than when they left it, Jer 44:15-19; to which the prophet replies by observing, that for the idolatry of their fathers their land was become a desolation and a curse, as at this day, Jer 44:20-23; and assures them that destruction would come from the Lord upon them, which he had swore to, Jer 44:24-28; and a sign of it is given; the delivery of the king of Egypt into the hand of the king of Babylon, Jer 44:29,30.
