There will be great 1earthquakes, and in various places 2famines and pestilences. And there will be 3terrors and great 4signs from heaven.

But before all this 5they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to 6the synagogues and 7prisons, and you 8will be brought before 9kings and 10governors for my name's sake.

11This will be your opportunity to bear witness.

Settle it therefore in your minds 12not to meditate beforehand how to answer,

for 13I will give you a mouth and 14wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or 15contradict.

You will be delivered up 16even by parents and brothers[a] and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death.
20"But 20when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that 21its desolation has come near.

Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, and let those who are inside the city depart, and let not those who are out in the country enter it,
