1They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.

2They do all their deeds
3to be seen by others. For they make
4their phylacteries broad and
5their fringes long,

and they
6love the place of honor at feasts and
7the best seats in the synagogues

and
8greetings in
9the marketplaces and being called
10rabbi by others.

11But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are
12all brothers.

13And call no man your father on earth, for
14you have one Father, who is in heaven.

Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor,
15the Christ.

16The greatest among you shall be your servant.

17Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

“But woe
18to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you
19shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you
20neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.
