Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,1 but Abram drove them away.
As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,2 and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.
Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved3 and mistreated four hundred years.414
But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out5 with great possessions.615
You, however, will go to your fathers7 in peace and be buried at a good old age.816
In the fourth generation9 your descendants will come back here,10 for the sin of the Amorites11 has not yet reached its full measure."
When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch12 appeared and passed between the pieces.1318
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram14 and said, "To your descendants I give this land,15 from the rivera of Egypt16 to the great river, the Euphrates17--
the land of the Kenites,18 Kenizzites, Kadmonites,
Hittites,19 Perizzites,20 Rephaites,2121
Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites."22
