As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,1 and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.

Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved2 and mistreated four hundred years.314
But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out4 with great possessions.515
You, however, will go to your fathers6 in peace and be buried at a good old age.716
In the fourth generation8 your descendants will come back here,9 for the sin of the Amorites10 has not yet reached its full measure."

When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch11 appeared and passed between the pieces.1218
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram13 and said, "To your descendants I give this land,14 from the rivera of Egypt15 to the great river, the Euphrates16--

the land of the Kenites,17 Kenizzites, Kadmonites,

Hittites,18 Perizzites,19 Rephaites,2021
Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites."21
