So the LORD said to him, "Bring me a heifer,1 a goat and a ram, each three years old,2 along with a dove and a young pigeon.3"

Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;4 the birds, however, he did not cut in half.511
Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,6 but Abram drove them away.

As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,7 and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.

Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved8 and mistreated four hundred years.914
But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out10 with great possessions.1115
You, however, will go to your fathers12 in peace and be buried at a good old age.1316
In the fourth generation14 your descendants will come back here,15 for the sin of the Amorites16 has not yet reached its full measure."

When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch17 appeared and passed between the pieces.1818
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram19 and said, "To your descendants I give this land,20 from the rivera of Egypt21 to the great river, the Euphrates22--
