Genesis 1:3-23 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
3 And God said,1 "Let there be light," and there was light.2 4 God saw that the light was good,3 and he separated the light from the darkness.4 5 God called5 the light "day," and the darkness he called "night."6 And there was evening, and there was morning7--the first day. 6 And God said,8 "Let there be an expanse9 between the waters10 to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it.11 And it was so.12 8 God called13 the expanse "sky."14 And there was evening, and there was morning15--the second day. 9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place,16 and let dry ground17 appear." And it was so.18 10 God called19 the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters20 he called "seas."21 And God saw that it was good.22 11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation:23 seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.24" And it was so.25 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds26 and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.27 13 And there was evening, and there was morning28--the third day. 14 And God said, "Let there be lights29 in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night,30 and let them serve as signs31 to mark seasons32 and days and years,33 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so.34 16 God made two great lights--the greater light35 to govern36 the day and the lesser light to govern37 the night.38 He also made the stars.39 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night,40 and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.41 19 And there was evening, and there was morning42--the fourth day. 20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures,43 and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."44 21 So God created45 the great creatures of the sea46 and every living and moving thing with which the water teems,47 according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind.48 And God saw that it was good.49 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth."50 23 And there was evening, and there was morning51--the fifth day.
