He said to the chiefa servant1 in his household, the one in charge of all that he had,2 "Put your hand under my thigh.33
I want you to swear4 by the LORD, the God of heaven5 and the God of earth,6 that you will not get a wife for my son7 from the daughters of the Canaanites,8 among whom I am living,94
but will go to my country and my own relatives10 and get a wife for my son Isaac.11"
The servant asked him, "What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?12 Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?13"
"Make sure that you do not take my son back there,"14 Abraham said.
"The LORD, the God of heaven,15 who brought me out of my father's household and my native land16 and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, 'To your offspringb17 I will give this land'18--he will send his angel before you19 so that you can get a wife for my son from there.
If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath20 of mine. Only do not take my son back there."219
So the servant put his hand under the thigh22 of his master23 Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
Then the servant took ten of his master's camels24 and left, taking with him all kinds of good things25 from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaimc26 and made his way to the town of Nahor.2711
He had the camels kneel down near the well28 outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.2912
Then he prayed, "O LORD, God of my master Abraham,30 give me success31 today, and show kindness32 to my master Abraham.
