This is the account1 of Abraham's son Isaac. Abraham became the father of Isaac,
and Isaac was forty years old2 when he married Rebekah3 daughter of Bethuel4 the Aramean from Paddan Arama5 and sister of Laban6 the Aramean.721
Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren.8 The LORD answered his prayer,9 and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, "Why is this happening to me?" So she went to inquire of the LORD.1023
The LORD said to her, "Two nations11 are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.12"
When the time came for her to give birth,13 there were twin boys in her womb.1425
The first to come out was red,15 and his whole body was like a hairy garment;16 so they named him Esau.b1726
After this, his brother came out,18 with his hand grasping Esau's heel;19 so he was named Jacob.c20 Isaac was sixty years old21 when Rebekah gave birth to them.
The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter,22 a man of the open country,23 while Jacob was a quiet man, staying among the tents.
Isaac, who had a taste for wild game,24 loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.2529
Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,26 Esau came in from the open country,27 famished.
