and Isaac was forty years old1 when he married Rebekah2 daughter of Bethuel3 the Aramean from Paddan Arama4 and sister of Laban5 the Aramean.621
Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren.7 The LORD answered his prayer,8 and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.
The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, "Why is this happening to me?" So she went to inquire of the LORD.923
The LORD said to her, "Two nations10 are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.11"
When the time came for her to give birth,12 there were twin boys in her womb.1325
The first to come out was red,14 and his whole body was like a hairy garment;15 so they named him Esau.b1626
After this, his brother came out,17 with his hand grasping Esau's heel;18 so he was named Jacob.c19 Isaac was sixty years old20 when Rebekah gave birth to them.
The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter,21 a man of the open country,22 while Jacob was a quiet man, staying among the tents.
Isaac, who had a taste for wild game,23 loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.2429
Once when Jacob was cooking some stew,25 Esau came in from the open country,26 famished.
He said to Jacob, "Quick, let me have some of that red stew!27 I'm famished!" (That is why he was also called Edom.d )28
