So Jacob said to his household1 and to all who were with him, "Get rid of the foreign gods2 you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.33
Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God,4 who answered me in the day of my distress5 and who has been with me wherever I have gone.6"
So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears,7 and Jacob buried them under the oak8 at Shechem.95
Then they set out, and the terror of God10 fell upon the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.116
Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz12 (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.137
There he built an altar,14 and he called the place El Bethel,a15 because it was there that God revealed himself to him16 when he was fleeing from his brother.178
Now Deborah, Rebekah's nurse,18 died and was buried under the oak19 below Bethel.20 So it was named Allon Bacuth.b9
After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,c21 God appeared to him again and blessed him.2210
God said to him, "Your name is Jacob,d but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.e "23 So he named him Israel.
And God said to him, "I am God Almightyf;24 be fruitful and increase in number.25 A nation26 and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body.2712
The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.28"29
