Jacob Goes to Egypt

1 So Israel1 set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba,2 he offered sacrifices3 to the God of his father Isaac.4 2 And God spoke to Israel5 in a vision at night6 and said, "Jacob! Jacob!" "Here I am,"7 he replied. 3 "I am God, the God of your father,"8 he said. "Do not be afraid9 to go down to Egypt,10 for I will make you into a great nation11 there.12 4 I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again.13 And Joseph's own hand will close your eyes.14" 5 Then Jacob left Beersheba,15 and Israel's16 sons took their father Jacob and their children and their wives in the carts17 that Pharaoh had sent to transport him. 6 They also took with them their livestock and the possessions18 they had acquired19 in Canaan, and Jacob and all his offspring went to Egypt.20 7 He took with him to Egypt21 his sons and grandsons and his daughters and granddaughters--all his offspring.22 8 These are the names of the sons of Israel23 (Jacob and his descendants) who went to Egypt: Reuben the firstborn24 of Jacob. 9 The sons of Reuben:25 Hanoch, Pallu,26 Hezron and Carmi.27 10 The sons of Simeon:28 Jemuel,29 Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar30 and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. 11 The sons of Levi:31 Gershon,32 Kohath33 and Merari.34
