but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind:1 'You are a priest forever.' "a222
Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.323
Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office;

but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.425
Therefore he is able to save5 completelyb those who come to God6 through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.726
Such a high priest8 meets our need--one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners,9 exalted above the heavens.1027
Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices11 day after day, first for his own sins,12 and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all13 when he offered himself.1428
For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak;15 but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son,16 who has been made perfect17 forever.
