Deuteronomy 25:17 Meaning and Commentary

Deuteronomy 25:17

Remember what Amalek did unto thee
The Amalekites, how they came out against them, and fought with them at Rephidim, ( Exodus 17:8 ) ;

by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt;
which was an aggravation of their cruel and inhuman action, that they not only came out against them unprovoked, were the aggressors, and fell upon them as they were travelling on the road, but when they were just come out of Egypt, where they had been in hard bondage, and their spirits broken, and they not used to war; and so took them at all these disadvantages, a people that had not in the least injured them.

Deuteronomy 25:17 In-Context

15 A perfect and just weight shall you have; a perfect and just measure shall you have: that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
16 For all who do such things, [even] all who do unrighteously, are an abomination to the LORD your God.
17 Remember what `Amalek did to you by the way as you came forth out of Mitzrayim;
18 how he met you by the way, and struck the hindmost of you, all who were feeble behind you, when you were faint and weary; and he didn't fear God.
19 Therefore it shall be, when the LORD your God has given you rest from all your enemies round about, in the land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance to possess it, that you shall blot out the memory of `Amalek from under the sky; you shall not forget.
