Genesis 36:1-19

Listen to Genesis 36:1-19
1 Now this is the history of the generations of Esav (the same is Edom).
2 Esav took his wives from the daughters of Kana`an: `Adah the daughter of Elon, the Hittite; and Oholivamah the daughter of `Anah, the daughter of Tziv`on, the Hivvi;
3 and Basemat, Yishma'el's daughter, sister of Nevayot.
4 `Adah bore to Esav Elifaz. Basemat bore Re`u'el.
5 Oholivamah bore Ye`ush, Ya`lam, and Korach. These are the sons of Esav, who were born to him in the land of Kana`an.
6 Esav took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, with his cattle, all his animals, and all his possessions, which he had gathered in the land of Kana`an, and went into a land away from his brother Ya`akov.
7 For their substance was too great for them to dwell together, and the land of their travels couldn't bear them because of their cattle.
8 Esav lived in the hill country of Se`ir. Esav is Edom.
9 This is the history of the generations of Esav the father of the Edom in the hill country of Se`ir:
10 these are the names of Esav's sons: Elifaz, the son of `Adah, the wife of Esav; and Re`u'el, the son of Basemat, the wife of Esav.
11 The sons of Elifaz were Teman, Omar, Tzefo, and Ga`tam, and Kenaz.
12 Timna was concubine to Elifaz, Esav's son; and she bore to Elifaz `Amalek. These are the sons of `Adah, Esav's wife.
13 These are the sons of Re`u'el: Nachat, Zerach, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Basemat, Esav's wife.
14 These were the sons of Oholivamah, the daughter of `Anah, the daughter of Tziv`on, Esav's wife: she bore to Esav Ye`ush, Ya`lam, and Korach.
15 These are the chiefs of the sons of Esav: the sons of Elifaz the firstborn of Esav: chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Tzefo, chief Kenaz,
16 chief Korach, chief Ga`tam, chief `Amalek: these are the chiefs who came of Elifaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of `Adah.
17 These are the sons of Re`u'el, Esav's son: chief Nachat, chief Zerach, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah: these are the chiefs who came of Re`u'el in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Basemat, Esav's wife.
18 These are the sons of Oholivamah, Esav's wife: chief Ye`ush, chief Ya`lam, chief Korach: these are the chiefs who came of Oholivamah the daughter of `Anah, Esav's wife.
19 These are the sons of Esav, and these are their chiefs. The same is Edom.

Genesis 36:1-19 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO GENESIS 36

This chapter gives us a genealogical account of Esau's family, of his wives and sons, with whom he removed from Seir, Ge 36:1-10; of his sons' sons, or grandsons, who were dukes in the land of Edom, Ge 36:11-19; after which is inserted a genealogy of Seir the Horite, into whose family Esau married, and of his children, and the dukes among them, Ge 36:20-30; then follows a list of the kings of Edom, before there were any in Israel, Ge 36:31-39; and the chapter is closed with a brief narration of the dukes of Esau, according to their families, Ge 36:40-43.
