Psalms 74:6

Psalms 74:6 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 74:6

But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with
axes and hammers.
] Formerly it was an honour to be employed in cutting down a tree for the building of the temple; but now so little regard was paid to it, that all its fine carved work, which Solomon made, ( 1 Kings 6:18 1 Kings 6:29 1 Kings 6:30 ) , was demolished at once in a rude and furious manner with axes and hammers; which was done either by the Chaldeans in Nebuchadnezzar's time, or by the Syrians in the times of Antiochus, or by the Romans in the times of Vespasian; the first seems intended; see ( Jeremiah 46:22 Jeremiah 46:23 ) .

Psalms 74:6 In-Context

4 Your adversaries have roared in the midst of your assembly. They have set up their standards as signs.
5 They behaved like men wielding axes, Cutting through a thicket of trees.
6 Now all its carved work They break down with hatchet and hammers.
7 They have burned your sanctuary to the ground. They have profaned the dwelling-place of your Name.
8 They said in their heart, "We will crush them completely." They have burned up all the places in the land where God was worshiped.
