Threshing floors and winepresses will not feed the people; the new wine1 will fail them.
They will not remain2 in the LORD's land; Ephraim will return to Egypt3 and eat uncleana food in Assyria.44
They will not pour out wine offerings5 to the LORD, nor will their sacrifices please6 him. Such sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners;7 all who eat them will be unclean.8 This food will be for themselves; it will not come into the temple of the LORD.95
What will you do10 on the day of your appointed feasts,11 on the festival days of the LORD?
Even if they escape from destruction, Egypt will gather them,12 and Memphis13 will bury them.14 Their treasures of silver15 will be taken over by briers, and thorns16 will overrun their tents.
The days of punishment17 are coming, the days of reckoning18 are at hand. Let Israel know this. Because your sins19 are so many and your hostility so great, the prophet is considered a fool,20 the inspired man a maniac.218
The prophet, along with my God, is the watchman over Ephraim,b yet snares22 await him on all his paths, and hostility in the house of his God.239
They have sunk deep into corruption,24 as in the days of Gibeah.25 God will remember26 their wickedness and punish them for their sins.2710
"When I found Israel, it was like finding grapes in the desert; when I saw your fathers, it was like seeing the early fruit28 on the fig29 tree. But when they came to Baal Peor,30 they consecrated themselves to that shameful idol31 and became as vile as the thing they loved.
Ephraim's glory32 will fly away like a bird33-- no birth, no pregnancy, no conception.3412
Even if they rear children, I will bereave35 them of every one. Woe36 to them when I turn away from them!37
