"I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me.1 To a nation2 that did not call on my name,3 I said, 'Here am I, here am I.'
All day long I have held out my hands to an obstinate people,4 who walk in ways not good, pursuing their own imaginations5--
a people who continually provoke me to my very face,6 offering sacrifices in gardens7 and burning incense8 on altars of brick;
who sit among the graves9 and spend their nights keeping secret vigil; who eat the flesh of pigs,10 and whose pots hold broth of unclean meat;
who say, 'Keep away; don't come near me, for I am too sacred11 for you!' Such people are smoke12 in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day.
"See, it stands written before me: I will not keep silent13 but will pay back14 in full; I will pay it back into their laps15--
both your sins16 and the sins of your fathers,"17 says the LORD. "Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains and defied me on the hills,18 I will measure into their laps the full payment19 for their former deeds."
This is what the LORD says: "As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes20 and men say, 'Don't destroy it, there is yet some good in it,' so will I do in behalf of my servants;21 I will not destroy them all.
I will bring forth descendants22 from Jacob, and from Judah those who will possess23 my mountains; my chosen24 people will inherit them, and there will my servants live.2510
Sharon26 will become a pasture for flocks,27 and the Valley of Achor28 a resting place for herds, for my people who seek29 me.
"But as for you who forsake30 the LORD and forget my holy mountain,31 who spread a table for Fortune and fill bowls of mixed wine32 for Destiny,
I will destine you for the sword,33 and you will all bend down for the slaughter;34 for I called but you did not answer,35 I spoke but you did not listen.36 You did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me."3713
Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "My servants will eat,38 but you will go hungry;39 my servants will drink,40 but you will go thirsty;41 my servants will rejoice,42 but you will be put to shame.4314
My servants will sing44 out of the joy of their hearts, but you will cry out45 from anguish of heart and wail in brokenness of spirit.
You will leave your name to my chosen ones as a curse;46 the Sovereign LORD will put you to death, but to his servants he will give another name.4716
Whoever invokes a blessing48 in the land will do so by the God of truth;49 he who takes an oath in the land will swear50 by the God of truth. For the past troubles51 will be forgotten and hidden from my eyes.
"Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth.52 The former things will not be remembered,53 nor will they come to mind.
But be glad and rejoice54 forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem55 to be a delight and its people a joy.
I will rejoice56 over Jerusalem and take delight57 in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying58 will be heard in it no more.
"Never again will there be in it an infant59 who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years;60 he who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere youth; he who fails to reacha a hundred will be considered accursed.
They will build houses61 and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.6222
No longer will they build houses and others live in them,63 or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree,64 so will be the days65 of my people; my chosen66 ones will long enjoy the works of their hands.
They will not toil in vain67 or bear children doomed to misfortune;68 for they will be a people blessed69 by the LORD, they and their descendants70 with them.
Before they call71 I will answer;72 while they are still speaking73 I will hear.
The wolf and the lamb74 will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox,75 but dust will be the serpent's76 food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,"77 says the LORD.
