Isaiah 53:1-10 (New International Version)

1 Who has believed our message1 and to whom has the arm2 of the LORD been revealed?3 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,4 and like a root5 out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance6 that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows,7 and familiar with suffering.8 Like one from whom men hide9 their faces he was despised,10 and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,11 yet we considered him stricken by God,12 smitten by him, and afflicted.13 5 But he was pierced14 for our transgressions,15 he was crushed16 for our iniquities; the punishment17 that brought us peace18 was upon him, and by his wounds19 we are healed.20 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,21 each of us has turned to his own way;22 and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity23 of us all. 7 He was oppressed24 and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;25 he was led like a lamb26 to the slaughter,27 and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By oppressiona and judgment28 he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living;29 for the transgression30 of my people he was stricken.b 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,31 and with the rich32 in his death, though he had done no violence,33 nor was any deceit in his mouth.34 10 Yet it was the LORD's will35 to crush36 him and cause him to suffer,37 and though the LORD makesc his life a guilt offering,38 he will see his offspring39 and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper40 in his hand.
