For he says: " 'By the strength of my hand1 I have done this,2 and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures;3 like a mighty one I subdueda their kings.414
As one reaches into a nest,5 so my hand reached for the wealth6 of the nations; as men gather abandoned eggs, so I gathered all the countries;7 not one flapped a wing, or opened its mouth to chirp.8' "
Does the ax raise itself above him who swings it, or the saw boast against him who uses it?9 As if a rod were to wield him who lifts it up, or a club10 brandish him who is not wood!
Therefore, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will send a wasting disease11 upon his sturdy warriors;12 under his pomp13 a fire14 will be kindled like a blazing flame.
The Light of Israel will become a fire,15 their Holy One16 a flame; in a single day it will burn and consume his thorns17 and his briers.1818
The splendor of his forests19 and fertile fields it will completely destroy,20 as when a sick man wastes away.
And the remaining trees of his forests21 will be so few22 that a child could write them down.
In that day23 the remnant of Israel, the survivors24 of the house of Jacob, will no longer rely25 on him who struck them down26 but will truly rely27 on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.2821
A remnant29 will return,b30 a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.3122
Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand32 by the sea, only a remnant will return.33 Destruction has been decreed,34 overwhelming and righteous.
The Lord, the LORD Almighty, will carry out the destruction decreed35 upon the whole land.36
