As one reaches into a nest,1 so my hand reached for the wealth2 of the nations; as men gather abandoned eggs, so I gathered all the countries;3 not one flapped a wing, or opened its mouth to chirp.4' "
Does the ax raise itself above him who swings it, or the saw boast against him who uses it?5 As if a rod were to wield him who lifts it up, or a club6 brandish him who is not wood!
Therefore, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will send a wasting disease7 upon his sturdy warriors;8 under his pomp9 a fire10 will be kindled like a blazing flame.
The Light of Israel will become a fire,11 their Holy One12 a flame; in a single day it will burn and consume his thorns13 and his briers.1418
The splendor of his forests15 and fertile fields it will completely destroy,16 as when a sick man wastes away.
And the remaining trees of his forests17 will be so few18 that a child could write them down.
In that day19 the remnant of Israel, the survivors20 of the house of Jacob, will no longer rely21 on him who struck them down22 but will truly rely23 on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.2421
A remnant25 will return,a26 a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.2722
Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand28 by the sea, only a remnant will return.29 Destruction has been decreed,30 overwhelming and righteous.
The Lord, the LORD Almighty, will carry out the destruction decreed31 upon the whole land.3224
Therefore, this is what the Lord, the LORD Almighty, says: "O my people who live in Zion,33 do not be afraid34 of the Assyrians, who beat35 you with a rod36 and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.
