A Prophecy Against Babylon

1 An oracle¹ concerning Babylon² that Isaiah son of Amoz³ saw:⁴ 2 Raise a banner⁵ on a bare hilltop, shout to them; beckon to them to enter the gates⁶ of the nobles. 3 I have commanded my holy ones; I have summoned my warriors⁷ to carry out my wrath⁸-- those who rejoice⁹ in my triumph. 4 Listen, a noise on the mountains, like that of a great multitude!¹⁰ Listen, an uproar¹¹ among the kingdoms, like nations massing together! The LORD Almighty¹² is mustering¹³ an army for war. 5 They come from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens¹⁴-- the LORD and the weapons¹⁵ of his wrath¹⁶-- to destroy¹⁷ the whole country. 6 Wail,¹⁸ for the day¹⁹ of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction²⁰ from the Almighty.^a²¹ 7 Because of this, all hands will go limp,²² every man's heart will melt.²³
