A Prophecy Against Babylon

1 An oracle1 concerning Babylon2 that Isaiah son of Amoz3 saw:4 2 Raise a banner5 on a bare hilltop, shout to them; beckon to them to enter the gates6 of the nobles. 3 I have commanded my holy ones; I have summoned my warriors7 to carry out my wrath8-- those who rejoice9 in my triumph. 4 Listen, a noise on the mountains, like that of a great multitude!10 Listen, an uproar11 among the kingdoms, like nations massing together! The LORD Almighty12 is mustering13 an army for war. 5 They come from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens14-- the LORD and the weapons15 of his wrath16-- to destroy17 the whole country. 6 Wail,18 for the day19 of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction20 from the Almighty.a21 7 Because of this, all hands will go limp,22 every man's heart will melt.23 8 Terror24 will seize them, pain and anguish will grip25 them; they will writhe like a woman in labor.26 They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame.27 9 See, the day28 of the LORD is coming --a cruel29 day, with wrath30 and fierce anger31-- to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it.
