See, I will stir up1 against them the Medes,2 who do not care for silver and have no delight in gold.3

Their bows4 will strike down the young men;5 they will have no mercy6 on infants nor will they look with compassion on children.7

Babylon,8 the jewel of kingdoms,9 the glory10 of the Babylonians'a pride, will be overthrown11 by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.12

She will never be inhabited13 or lived in through all generations; no Arab14 will pitch his tent there, no shepherd will rest his flocks there.
21
But desert creatures15 will lie there, jackals16 will fill her houses; there the owls17 will dwell, and there the wild goats18 will leap about.
22
Hyenas19 will howl in her strongholds,20 jackals21 in her luxurious palaces. Her time is at hand,22 and her days will not be prolonged.23
