13
You said in your heart, "I will ascend1 to heaven; I will raise my throne2 above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,3 on the utmost heights4 of the sacred mountain.a14
I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;5 I will make myself like the Most High."615
But you are brought down7 to the grave,8 to the depths9 of the pit.1016
Those who see you stare at you, they ponder your fate:11 "Is this the man who shook12 the earth and made kingdoms tremble,
17
the man who made the world a desert,13 who overthrew14 its cities and would not let his captives go home?"1518
All the kings of the nations lie in state, each in his own tomb.1619
But you are cast out17 of your tomb like a rejected branch; you are covered with the slain,18 with those pierced by the sword,19 those who descend to the stones of the pit.20 Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
20
you will not join them in burial,21 for you have destroyed your land and killed your people. The offspring22 of the wicked23 will never be mentioned24 again.
21
Prepare a place to slaughter his sons25 for the sins of their forefathers;26 they are not to rise to inherit the land and cover the earth with their cities.
22
"I will rise up27 against them," declares the LORD Almighty. "I will cut off from Babylon her name28 and survivors, her offspring and descendants,29" declares the LORD.
23
"I will turn her into a place for owls30 and into swampland; I will sweep her with the broom of destruction,31" declares the LORD Almighty.32
