Isaiah 16:1-9 (New International Version)

1 Send lambs1 as tribute2 to the ruler of the land, from Sela,3 across the desert, to the mount of the Daughter of Zion.4 2 Like fluttering birds pushed from the nest,5 so are the women of Moab6 at the fords7 of the Arnon.8 3 "Give us counsel, render a decision. Make your shadow like night-- at high noon. Hide the fugitives,9 do not betray the refugees. 4 Let the Moabite fugitives stay with you; be their shelter10 from the destroyer." The oppressor11 will come to an end, and destruction will cease;12 the aggressor will vanish from the land. 5 In love a throne13 will be established;14 in faithfulness a man will sit on it-- one from the housea of David15-- one who in judging seeks justice16 and speeds the cause of righteousness. 6 We have heard of Moab's17 pride18-- her overweening pride and conceit, her pride and her insolence-- but her boasts are empty. 7 Therefore the Moabites wail,19 they wail together for Moab. Lament and grieve for the menb20 of Kir Hareseth.21 8 The fields of Heshbon22 wither,23 the vines of Sibmah24 also. The rulers of the nations have trampled down the choicest vines,25 which once reached Jazer26 and spread toward the desert. Their shoots spread out27 and went as far as the sea.28 9 So I weep,29 as Jazer weeps, for the vines of Sibmah. O Heshbon, O Elealeh,30 I drench you with tears!31 The shouts of joy32 over your ripened fruit and over your harvests33 have been stilled.
