My soul yearns for you in the night;1 in the morning my spirit longs2 for you. When your judgments3 come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.410
Though grace is shown to the wicked,5 they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil6 and regard7 not the majesty of the LORD.
O LORD, your hand is lifted high,8 but they do not see9 it. Let them see your zeal10 for your people and be put to shame;11 let the fire12 reserved for your enemies consume them.
LORD, you establish peace13 for us; all that we have accomplished you have done14 for us.
O LORD, our God, other lords15 besides you have ruled over us, but your name16 alone do we honor.1714
They are now dead,18 they live no more; those departed spirits19 do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin;20 you wiped out all memory of them.2115
You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; you have enlarged the nation.22 You have gained glory for yourself; you have extended all the borders23 of the land.
LORD, they came to you in their distress;24 when you disciplined25 them, they could barely whisper26 a prayer.a17
As a woman with child and about to give birth27 writhes and cries out in her pain, so were we in your presence, O LORD.
We were with child, we writhed in pain, but we gave birth28 to wind. We have not brought salvation29 to the earth; we have not given birth to people of the world.3019
But your dead31 will live; their bodies will rise. You who dwell in the dust,32 wake up and shout for joy. Your dew33 is like the dew of the morning; the earth will give birth to her dead.34
