Isaiah 29:5-15 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
5 But your many enemies will become like fine dust,1 the ruthless2 hordes like blown chaff.3 Suddenly,4 in an instant, 6 the LORD Almighty will come5 with thunder6 and earthquake7 and great noise, with windstorm and tempest8 and flames of a devouring fire.9 7 Then the hordes of all the nations10 that fight against Ariel,11 that attack her and her fortress and besiege her, will be as it is with a dream,12 with a vision in the night-- 8 as when a hungry man dreams that he is eating, but he awakens,13 and his hunger remains; as when a thirsty man dreams that he is drinking, but he awakens faint, with his thirst unquenched.14 So will it be with the hordes of all the nations that fight against Mount Zion.15 9 Be stunned and amazed,16 blind yourselves and be sightless;17 be drunk,18 but not from wine,19 stagger,20 but not from beer. 10 The LORD has brought over you a deep sleep:21 He has sealed your eyes22 (the prophets);23 he has covered your heads (the seers).24 11 For you this whole vision25 is nothing but words sealed26 in a scroll. And if you give the scroll to someone who can read, and say to him, "Read this, please," he will answer, "I can't; it is sealed." 12 Or if you give the scroll to someone who cannot read, and say, "Read this, please," he will answer, "I don't know how to read." 13 The Lord says: "These people27 come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips,28 but their hearts are far from me.29 Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.a30 14 Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder;31 the wisdom of the wise32 will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.33" 15 Woe to those who go to great depths to hide34 their plans from the LORD, who do their work in darkness and think, "Who sees us?35 Who will know?"36
