As for an idol,1 a craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith2 overlays it with gold3 and fashions silver chains for it.
A man too poor to present such an offering selects wood4 that will not rot. He looks for a skilled craftsman to set up an idol5 that will not topple.621
Do you not know? Have you not heard?7 Has it not been told8 you from the beginning?9 Have you not understood10 since the earth was founded?1122
He sits enthroned12 above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers.13 He stretches out the heavens14 like a canopy,15 and spreads them out like a tent16 to live in.1723
He brings princes18 to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.1924
No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root20 in the ground, than he blows21 on them and they wither,22 and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.2325
"To whom will you compare me?24 Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One.2526
Lift your eyes and look to the heavens:26 Who created27 all these? He who brings out the starry host28 one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength,29 not one of them is missing.3027
Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God"?3128
Do you not know? Have you not heard?32 The LORD is the everlasting33 God, the Creator34 of the ends of the earth.35 He will not grow tired or weary,36 and his understanding no one can fathom.3729
He gives strength38 to the weary39 and increases the power of the weak.
