"Go down, sit in the dust,1 Virgin Daughter2 of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, Daughter of the Babylonians.a3 No more will you be called tender or delicate.42
Take millstones5 and grind6 flour; take off your veil.7 Lift up your skirts,8 bare your legs, and wade through the streams.
Your nakedness9 will be exposed and your shame10 uncovered. I will take vengeance;11 I will spare no one.12"
Our Redeemer13--the LORD Almighty14 is his name15-- is the Holy One16 of Israel.
"Sit in silence,17 go into darkness,18 Daughter of the Babylonians;19 no more will you be called queen20 of kingdoms.216
I was angry22 with my people and desecrated my inheritance;23 I gave them into your hand,24 and you showed them no mercy.25 Even on the aged you laid a very heavy yoke.
You said, 'I will continue forever26-- the eternal queen!'27 But you did not consider these things or reflect28 on what might happen.298
"Now then, listen, you wanton creature, lounging in your security30 and saying to yourself, 'I am, and there is none besides me.31 I will never be a widow32 or suffer the loss of children.'
Both of these will overtake you in a moment,33 on a single day: loss of children34 and widowhood.35 They will come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries36 and all your potent spells.3710
You have trusted38 in your wickedness and have said, 'No one sees me.'39 Your wisdom40 and knowledge mislead41 you when you say to yourself, 'I am, and there is none besides me.'
Disaster42 will come upon you, and you will not know how to conjure it away. A calamity will fall upon you that you cannot ward off with a ransom; a catastrophe you cannot foresee will suddenly43 come upon you.
