I clothe the sky with darkness1 and make sackcloth2 its covering."
The Sovereign LORD3 has given me an instructed tongue,4 to know the word that sustains the weary.5 He wakens me morning by morning,6 wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.75
The Sovereign LORD8 has opened my ears,9 and I have not been rebellious;10 I have not drawn back.
I offered my back to those who beat11 me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;12 I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.137
Because the Sovereign LORD14 helps15 me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore have I set my face like flint,16 and I know I will not be put to shame.178
He who vindicates18 me is near.19 Who then will bring charges against me?20 Let us face each other!21 Who is my accuser? Let him confront me!
It is the Sovereign LORD22 who helps23 me. Who is he that will condemn24 me? They will all wear out like a garment; the moths25 will eat them up.
Who among you fears26 the LORD and obeys27 the word of his servant?28 Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light,29 trust30 in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.
But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches,31 go, walk in the light of your fires32 and of the torches you have set ablaze. This is what you shall receive from my hand:33 You will lie down in torment.34
