"I, even I, am he who comforts1 you. Who are you that you fear2 mortal men,3 the sons of men, who are but grass,413
that you forget5 the LORD your Maker,6 who stretched out the heavens7 and laid the foundations of the earth, that you live in constant terror8 every day because of the wrath of the oppressor, who is bent on destruction? For where is the wrath of the oppressor?914
The cowering prisoners will soon be set free;10 they will not die in their dungeon, nor will they lack bread.1115
For I am the LORD your God, who churns up the sea12 so that its waves roar13-- the LORD Almighty14 is his name.

I have put my words in your mouth15 and covered you with the shadow of my hand16-- I who set the heavens in place, who laid the foundations of the earth,17 and who say to Zion, 'You are my people.18' "

Awake, awake!19 Rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup20 of his wrath,21 you who have drained to its dregs22 the goblet that makes men stagger.2318
Of all the sons24 she bore there was none to guide her;25 of all the sons she reared there was none to take her by the hand.2619
These double calamities27 have come upon you-- who can comfort you?28-- ruin and destruction,29 famine30 and sword31-- who cana console you?

Your sons have fainted; they lie at the head of every street,32 like antelope caught in a net.33 They are filled with the wrath34 of the LORD and the rebuke35 of your God.

Therefore hear this, you afflicted36 one, made drunk,37 but not with wine.

This is what your Sovereign LORD says, your God, who defends38 his people: "See, I have taken out of your hand the cup39 that made you stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink again.
