The cowering prisoners will soon be set free;1 they will not die in their dungeon, nor will they lack bread.215
For I am the LORD your God, who churns up the sea3 so that its waves roar4-- the LORD Almighty5 is his name.
I have put my words in your mouth6 and covered you with the shadow of my hand7-- I who set the heavens in place, who laid the foundations of the earth,8 and who say to Zion, 'You are my people.9' "
Awake, awake!10 Rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup11 of his wrath,12 you who have drained to its dregs13 the goblet that makes men stagger.1418
Of all the sons15 she bore there was none to guide her;16 of all the sons she reared there was none to take her by the hand.1719
These double calamities18 have come upon you-- who can comfort you?19-- ruin and destruction,20 famine21 and sword22-- who cana console you?
Your sons have fainted; they lie at the head of every street,23 like antelope caught in a net.24 They are filled with the wrath25 of the LORD and the rebuke26 of your God.
Therefore hear this, you afflicted27 one, made drunk,28 but not with wine.
This is what your Sovereign LORD says, your God, who defends29 his people: "See, I have taken out of your hand the cup30 that made you stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink again.
I will put it into the hands of your tormentors,31 who said to you, 'Fall prostrate32 that we may walk33 over you.' And you made your back like the ground, like a street to be walked over."34
