For I am the LORD your God, who churns up the sea1 so that its waves roar2-- the LORD Almighty3 is his name.
I have put my words in your mouth4 and covered you with the shadow of my hand5-- I who set the heavens in place, who laid the foundations of the earth,6 and who say to Zion, 'You are my people.7' "
Awake, awake!8 Rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup9 of his wrath,10 you who have drained to its dregs11 the goblet that makes men stagger.1218
Of all the sons13 she bore there was none to guide her;14 of all the sons she reared there was none to take her by the hand.1519
These double calamities16 have come upon you-- who can comfort you?17-- ruin and destruction,18 famine19 and sword20-- who cana console you?
Your sons have fainted; they lie at the head of every street,21 like antelope caught in a net.22 They are filled with the wrath23 of the LORD and the rebuke24 of your God.
Therefore hear this, you afflicted25 one, made drunk,26 but not with wine.
This is what your Sovereign LORD says, your God, who defends27 his people: "See, I have taken out of your hand the cup28 that made you stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink again.
I will put it into the hands of your tormentors,29 who said to you, 'Fall prostrate30 that we may walk31 over you.' And you made your back like the ground, like a street to be walked over."32
