Is this the kind of fast1 I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble2 himself ? Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed3 and for lying on sackcloth and ashes?4 Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD?
"Is not this the kind of fasting5 I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice6 and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed7 free and break every yoke?87
Is it not to share your food with the hungry9 and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter10-- when you see the naked, to clothe11 him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?128
Then your light will break forth like the dawn,13 and your healing14 will quickly appear; then your righteousnessa15 will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.169
Then you will call,17 and the LORD will answer;18 you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. "If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger19 and malicious talk,2010
and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,21 then your light22 will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.2311
The LORD will guide24 you always; he will satisfy your needs25 in a sun-scorched land26 and will strengthen27 your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden,28 like a spring29 whose waters never fail.
Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins30 and will raise up the age-old foundations;31 you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,32 Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
"If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath33 and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight34 and the LORD's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,3514
then you will find your joy36 in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights37 of the land and to feast on the inheritance38 of your father Jacob." The mouth of the LORD has spoken.39
