Isaiah 58:6-12 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
6 "Is not this the kind of fasting1 I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice2 and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed3 free and break every yoke?4 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry5 and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter6-- when you see the naked, to clothe7 him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?8 8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,9 and your healing10 will quickly appear; then your righteousnessa11 will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.12 9 Then you will call,13 and the LORD will answer;14 you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. "If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger15 and malicious talk,16 10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,17 then your light18 will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.19 11 The LORD will guide20 you always; he will satisfy your needs21 in a sun-scorched land22 and will strengthen23 your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden,24 like a spring25 whose waters never fail. 12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins26 and will raise up the age-old foundations;27 you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,28 Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
