Oh, that you would rend the heavens1 and come down,2 that the mountains3 would tremble before you!
As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make your name4 known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake5 before you!
For when you did awesome6 things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled7 before you.
Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you,8 who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.95
You come to the help of those who gladly do right,10 who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry.11 How then can we be saved?
All of us have become like one who is unclean,12 and all our righteous13 acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf,14 and like the wind our sins sweep us away.157
No one16 calls on your name17 or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden18 your face from us and made us waste away19 because of our sins.
Yet, O LORD, you are our Father.20 We are the clay, you are the potter;21 we are all the work of your hand.229
Do not be angry23 beyond measure, O LORD; do not remember our sins24 forever. Oh, look upon us, we pray, for we are all your people.2510
Your sacred cities26 have become a desert; even Zion is a desert, Jerusalem a desolation.27
