For when you did awesome1 things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled2 before you.
Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you,3 who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.45
You come to the help of those who gladly do right,5 who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry.6 How then can we be saved?
All of us have become like one who is unclean,7 and all our righteous8 acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf,9 and like the wind our sins sweep us away.107
No one11 calls on your name12 or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden13 your face from us and made us waste away14 because of our sins.
Yet, O LORD, you are our Father.15 We are the clay, you are the potter;16 we are all the work of your hand.179
Do not be angry18 beyond measure, O LORD; do not remember our sins19 forever. Oh, look upon us, we pray, for we are all your people.2010
Your sacred cities21 have become a desert; even Zion is a desert, Jerusalem a desolation.2211
Our holy and glorious temple,23 where our fathers praised you, has been burned with fire, and all that we treasured24 lies in ruins.
After all this, O LORD, will you hold yourself back?25 Will you keep silent26 and punish us beyond measure?
