You come to the help of those who gladly do right,1 who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry.2 How then can we be saved?
All of us have become like one who is unclean,3 and all our righteous4 acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf,5 and like the wind our sins sweep us away.67
No one7 calls on your name8 or strives to lay hold of you; for you have hidden9 your face from us and made us waste away10 because of our sins.
Yet, O LORD, you are our Father.11 We are the clay, you are the potter;12 we are all the work of your hand.139
Do not be angry14 beyond measure, O LORD; do not remember our sins15 forever. Oh, look upon us, we pray, for we are all your people.1610
Your sacred cities17 have become a desert; even Zion is a desert, Jerusalem a desolation.1811
Our holy and glorious temple,19 where our fathers praised you, has been burned with fire, and all that we treasured20 lies in ruins.
After all this, O LORD, will you hold yourself back?21 Will you keep silent22 and punish us beyond measure?
