a people who continually provoke me to my very face,1 offering sacrifices in gardens2 and burning incense3 on altars of brick;
who sit among the graves4 and spend their nights keeping secret vigil; who eat the flesh of pigs,5 and whose pots hold broth of unclean meat;
who say, 'Keep away; don't come near me, for I am too sacred6 for you!' Such people are smoke7 in my nostrils, a fire that keeps burning all day.
"See, it stands written before me: I will not keep silent8 but will pay back9 in full; I will pay it back into their laps10--
both your sins11 and the sins of your fathers,"12 says the LORD. "Because they burned sacrifices on the mountains and defied me on the hills,13 I will measure into their laps the full payment14 for their former deeds."
This is what the LORD says: "As when juice is still found in a cluster of grapes15 and men say, 'Don't destroy it, there is yet some good in it,' so will I do in behalf of my servants;16 I will not destroy them all.
I will bring forth descendants17 from Jacob, and from Judah those who will possess18 my mountains; my chosen19 people will inherit them, and there will my servants live.2010
Sharon21 will become a pasture for flocks,22 and the Valley of Achor23 a resting place for herds, for my people who seek24 me.
"But as for you who forsake25 the LORD and forget my holy mountain,26 who spread a table for Fortune and fill bowls of mixed wine27 for Destiny,
I will destine you for the sword,28 and you will all bend down for the slaughter;29 for I called but you did not answer,30 I spoke but you did not listen.31 You did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me."3213
Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "My servants will eat,33 but you will go hungry;34 my servants will drink,35 but you will go thirsty;36 my servants will rejoice,37 but you will be put to shame.38
