You have enlarged the nation1 and increased their joy;2 they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder.34
For as in the day of Midian's defeat,4 you have shattered5 the yoke6 that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders,7 the rod of their oppressor.85
Every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning,9 will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,10 to us a son is given,11 and the government12 will be on his shoulders.13 And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,a14 Mighty God,15 Everlasting16 Father,17 Prince of Peace.187
Of the increase of his government19 and peace20 there will be no end.21 He will reign22 on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice23 and righteousness24 from that time on and forever.25 The zeal26 of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
The Lord has sent a message27 against Jacob; it will fall on Israel.
All the people will know it-- Ephraim28 and the inhabitants of Samaria29-- who say with pride and arrogance30 of heart,
"The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone;31 the fig32 trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.33"
But the LORD has strengthened Rezin's34 foes against them and has spurred their enemies on.
Arameans35 from the east and Philistines36 from the west have devoured37 Israel with open mouth. Yet for all this, his anger38 is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.3913
But the people have not returned40 to him who struck41 them, nor have they sought42 the LORD Almighty.
