For to us a child is born,1 to us a son is given,2 and the government3 will be on his shoulders.4 And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,a5 Mighty God,6 Everlasting7 Father,8 Prince of Peace.97
Of the increase of his government10 and peace11 there will be no end.12 He will reign13 on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice14 and righteousness15 from that time on and forever.16 The zeal17 of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
The Lord has sent a message18 against Jacob; it will fall on Israel.
All the people will know it-- Ephraim19 and the inhabitants of Samaria20-- who say with pride and arrogance21 of heart,
"The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone;22 the fig23 trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.24"
But the LORD has strengthened Rezin's25 foes against them and has spurred their enemies on.
Arameans26 from the east and Philistines27 from the west have devoured28 Israel with open mouth. Yet for all this, his anger29 is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.3013
But the people have not returned31 to him who struck32 them, nor have they sought33 the LORD Almighty.
So the LORD will cut off from Israel both head and tail, both palm branch and reed34 in a single day;3515
the elders36 and prominent men37 are the head, the prophets38 who teach lies39 are the tail.
Those who guide40 this people mislead them, and those who are guided are led astray.41
