He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines.2 He built a watchtower3 in it and cut out a winepress4 as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit.5
The vineyard15 of the LORD Almighty is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are the garden of his delight. And he looked for justice,16 but saw bloodshed; for righteousness,17 but heard cries of distress.18
Therefore, as tongues of fire62 lick up straw63 and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay64 and their flowers blow away like dust;65 for they have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty and spurned the word66 of the Holy One67 of Israel.
Therefore the LORD's anger68 burns against his people; his hand is raised and he strikes them down. The mountains shake,69 and the dead bodies70 are like refuse71 in the streets.72 Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,73 his hand is still upraised.74
