1 Pero el rey Salomón amó a muchas mujeres extranjeras junto con la hija de Faraón; a las de Moab, a las de Amón, a las de Idumea, a las de Sidón, y a las heteas

2 de los gentiles de las cuales el SEÑOR había dicho a los hijos de Israel: No entraréis a ellas, ni ellas entrarán a vosotros; porque ciertamente ellas harán inclinar vuestros corazones tras sus dioses. A éstas pues se juntó Salomón con amor

3 Y tuvo setecientas mujeres princesas, y trescientas concubinas; y sus mujeres hicieron inclinar su corazón

4 Y ya que Salomón era viejo, sus mujeres inclinaron su corazón tras dioses ajenos; y su corazón no era perfecto con el SEÑOR su Dios, como el corazón de su padre David

5 Porque Salomón siguió a Astoret, diosa de los sidonios, y a Milcom, abominación de los amonitas

6 E hizo Salomón lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, y no siguió cumplidamente tras el SEÑOR como David su padre

7 Entonces edificó Salomón un lugar alto a Quemos, abominación de Moab, en el monte que está enfrente de Jerusalén; y a Moloc, abominación de los hijos de Amón

8 Y así hizo para todas sus mujeres extranjeras, las cuales quemaban perfumes, y sacrificaban a sus dioses

9 Y se enojó el SEÑOR contra Salomón, por cuanto estaba su corazón desviado del SEÑOR Dios de Israel, que se le había aparecido dos veces

10 y le había mandado acerca de esto, que no siguiera dioses ajenos; mas él no guardó lo que le mandó el SEÑOR

11 Y dijo el SEÑOR a Salomón: Por cuanto ha habido esto en ti, y no has guardado mi pacto y mis estatutos que yo te mandé, romperé el reino de ti, y lo entregaré a tu siervo

12 Pero no lo haré en tus días, por amor de David tu padre; lo romperé de la mano de tu hijo

13 Sin embargo no romperé todo el reino, sino que daré una tribu a tu hijo, por amor de David mi siervo, y por amor de Jerusalén que yo he elegido

14 Y el SEÑOR suscitó un adversario a Salomón, a Adad, idumeo, de la simiente real, el cual estaba en Edom

15 Porque cuando David estaba en Edom, y subió Joab el general del ejército a enterrar los muertos, y mató a todos los varones de Edo

16 (porque seis meses habitó allí Joab, y todo Israel, hasta que hubo acabado a todo el sexo masculino en Edom)

17 entonces huyó Adad, y con él algunos varones idumeos de los siervos de su padre, y se fue a Egipto; era entonces Adad muchacho pequeño

18 Y se levantaron de Madián, y vinieron a Parán; y tomando consigo varones de Parán, vinieron a Egipto, a Faraón rey de Egipto, el cual le dio casa, y le mandó dar alimentos, y también le dio tierra

19 Y halló Adad grande gracia delante de Faraón, el cual le dio por mujer a la hermana de su esposa, a la hermana de la reina Tahpenes

20 Y la hermana de Tahpenes le dio a luz a su hijo Genubat, al cual destetó Tahpenes dentro de la casa del Faraón; y estaba Genubat en la casa del Faraón entre los hijos de Faraón

21 Y oyendo Adad en Egipto que David había dormido con sus padres, y que había muerto Joab general del ejército, Adad dijo a Faraón: Déjame ir a mi tierra

22 Y le respondió Faraón: ¿Por qué? ¿Qué te falta conmigo, que procuras irte a tu tierra? Y él respondió: Nada; con todo, te ruego que me dejes ir

23 Le despertó también Dios por adversario a Rezón, hijo de Eliada, el cual había huido de su amo Hadad-ezer, rey de Soba

24 Y había juntado gente contra él, y se había hecho capitán de una compañía, cuando David deshizo a los de Soba. Después se fueron a Damasco, y habitaron allí y le hicieron rey en Damasco

25 Y fue adversario a Israel todos los días de Salomón; y fue otro mal con el de Adad, porque aborreció a Israel, y reinó sobre Siria

26 Asimismo Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, efrateo de Sereda, siervo de Salomón (su madre se llamaba Zerúa, mujer viuda), alzó su mano contra el rey

27 Y la causa porque éste alzó mano contra el rey, fue ésta: Salomón edificando a Milo, cerró el portillo de la ciudad de David su padre

28 Y el varón Jeroboam era valiente y esforzado; y viendo Salomón al joven que era hombre activo, le encomendó todo el cargo de la casa de José

29 Aconteció, pues, en aquel tiempo, que saliendo Jeroboam de Jerusalén, le encontró en el camino el profeta Ahías, el silonita; y él estaba cubierto con una capa nueva; y estaban ellos dos solos en el campo

30 Y trabando Ahías de la capa nueva que tenía sobre sí, la rompió en doce pedazos

31 y dijo a Jeroboam: Toma para ti los diez pedazos; porque así dijo el SEÑOR Dios de Israel: He aquí que yo rompo el reino de la mano de Salomón, y a ti daré diez tribus

32 y él tendrá una tribu, por amor de David mi siervo, y por amor de Jerusalén, ciudad que yo he elegido de todas las tribus de Israel

33 por cuanto me han dejado, y han adorado a Astoret diosa de los sidonios, y a Quemos dios de Moab, y a Moloc dios de los hijos de Amón; y no han andado en mis caminos, para hacer lo que es recto delante de mis ojos, y mis estatutos, y mis derechos, como hizo David su padre

34 Pero no quitaré nada de su reino de sus manos, sino que lo pondré por príncipe todos los días de su vida, por amor de David mi siervo, al cual yo elegí, y él guardó mis mandamientos y mis estatutos

35 Mas yo quitaré el reino de la mano de su hijo, y lo daré a ti, las diez tribus

36 y a su hijo daré una tribu, para que mi siervo David tenga lámpara todos los días delante de mi faz en Jerusalén, ciudad que yo me elegí para poner en ella mi nombre

37 Yo pues te tomaré a ti, y tú reinarás en todas las cosas que deseare tu alma, y serás rey sobre Israel

38 Y será que, si prestares oído a todas las cosas que te mandare, y anduvieres en mis caminos, e hicieres lo que es recto delante de mis ojos, guardando mis estatutos y mis mandamientos, como hizo David mi siervo, yo estaré contigo, y te edificaré casa firme, como la edifiqué a David, y yo te entregaré a Israel

39 Y yo afligiré la simiente de David a causa de esto, mas no para siempre

40 Procuró por tanto Salomón matar a Jeroboam, pero se levantó Jeroboam y huyó a Egipto, a Sisac rey de Egipto, y estuvo en Egipto hasta la muerte de Salomón

41 Los demás hechos de Salomón, y todas las cosas que hizo, y su sabiduría, ¿no están escritas en el libro de los hechos de Salomón

42 Y los días que Salomón reinó en Jerusalén sobre todo Israel, fueron cuarenta años

43 Y durmió Salomón con sus padres, y fue sepultado en la ciudad de su padre David; y reinó en su lugar Roboam su hijo

Chapter 11

Solomon's wives and concubines, His idolatry. (1-8) God's anger. (9-13) Solomon's adversaries. (14-25) Jeroboam's promotion. (26-40) The death of Solomon. (41-43)

Verses 1-8 There is not a more melancholy and astonishing instance of human depravity in the sacred Scriptures, than that here recorded. Solomon became a public worshipper of abominable idols! Probably he by degrees gave way to pride and luxury, and thus lost his relish for true wisdom. Nothing forms in itself a security against the deceitfulness and depravity of the human heart. Nor will old age cure the heart of any evil propensity. If our sinful passions are not crucified and mortified by the grace of God, they never will die of themselves, but will last even when opportunities to gratify them are taken away. Let him that thinks he stands, take heed lest he fall. We see how weak we are of ourselves, without the grace of God; let us therefore live in constant dependence on that grace. Let us watch and be sober: ours is a dangerous warfare, and in an enemy's country, while our worst foes are the traitors in our own hearts.

Verses 9-13 The Lord told Solomon, it is likely by a prophet, what he must expect for his apostacy. Though we have reason to hope that he repented, and found mercy, yet the Holy Ghost did not expressly record it, but left it doubtful, as a warning to others not to sin. The guilt may be taken away, but not the reproach; that will remain. Thus it must remain uncertain to us till the day of judgment, whether or not Solomon was left to suffer the everlasting displeasure of an offended God.

Verses 14-25 While Solomon kept close to God and to his duty, there was no enemy to give him uneasiness; but here we have an account of two. If against us, he can make us fear even the least, and the very grasshopper shall be a burden. Though they were moved by principles of ambition or revenge, God used them to correct Solomon.

Verses 26-40 In telling the reason why God rent the kingdom from the house of Solomon, Ahijah warned Jeroboam to take heed of sinning away his preferment. Yet the house of David must be supported; out of it the Messiah would arise. Solomon sought to kill his successor. Had not he taught others, that whatever devices are in men's hearts, the counsel of the Lord shall stand? Yet he himself thinks to defeat that counsel. Jeroboam withdrew into Egypt, and was content to live in exile and obscurity for awhile, being sure of a kingdom at last. Shall not we be content, who have a better kingdom in reserve?

Verses 41-43 Solomon's reign was as long as his father's, but his life was not so. Sin shortened his days. If the world, with all its advantages, could satisfy the soul, and afford real joy, Solomon would have found it so. But he was disappointed in all, and to warn us, has left this record of all earthly enjoyments, "Vanity and vexation of spirit." The New Testament declares that one greater than Solomon is come to reign over us, and to possess the throne of his father David. May we not see something of Christ's excellency faintly represented to us in this figure?

This chapter relates the false steps Solomon took, notwithstanding all his wisdom, in marrying strange wives, and worshipping other gods, 1Ki 11:1-8 upon which the Lord threatens him to rend the kingdom in his son's time, 1Ki 11:9-13 and he raised up adversaries against him, Hadad, Rezon, and Jeroboam, 1Ki 11:14-26 of which last an account is given, and of his being assured by Ahijah the prophet of his having ten of the tribes of Israel given to him; which Solomon having notice of sought to slay him, 1Ki 11:27-40 and the chapter is concluded with an account of Solomon's death and burial, 1Ki 11:41-43.
