Levítico 10

1 Y los hijos de Aarón, Nadab y Abiú, tomaron cada uno su incensario, y pusieron fuego en ellos, sobre el cual pusieron perfume, y ofrecieron delante del SEÑOR fuego extraño, que él nunca les mandó

2 Y salió fuego de la presencia del SEÑOR que los quemó, y murieron delante del SEÑOR

3 Entonces dijo Moisés a Aarón: Esto es lo que habló el SEÑOR, diciendo: En los que a mí se acercan me santificaré, y en presencia de todo el pueblo seré glorificado. Y Aarón calló

4 Y llamó Moisés a Misael, y a Elzafán, hijos de Uziel, tío de Aarón, y les dijo; acercaos y sacad a vuestros hermanos de delante del santuario fuera del campamento

5 Y ellos se acercaron, y los sacaron en sus túnicas fuera del campamento, como dijo Moisés

6 Entonces Moisés dijo a Aarón, y a Eleazar y a Itamar, sus hijos: No descubráis vuestras cabezas, ni rasguéis vuestros vestidos, para que no muráis, ni se levante la ira sobre toda la congregación; pero vuestros hermanos, toda la Casa de Israel, lamentarán por el incendio que el SEÑOR ha hecho

7 Ni saldréis de la puerta del tabernáculo del testimonio, porque moriréis; por cuanto el aceite de la unción del SEÑOR está sobre vosotros. Y ellos hicieron conforme al dicho de Moisés

8 El SEÑOR habló a Aarón, diciendo

9 Tú, y tus hijos contigo, no beberéis vino ni sidra, cuando hubiereis de entrar en el tabernáculo del testimonio, para que no muráis; será estatuto perpetuo por vuestras generaciones

10 y esto para poder discernir entre lo santo y lo profano, y entre lo inmundo y lo limpio

11 y para enseñar a los hijos de Israel todos los estatutos que el SEÑOR les ha dicho por mano de Moisés

12 Y Moisés dijo a Aarón, y a Eleazar y a Itamar, sus hijos que le quedaban: Tomad el presente que queda de las ofrendas encendidas al SEÑOR, y comedlo sin levadura junto al altar, porque es cosa santísima

13 Habéis, pues, de comerlo en el lugar santo; porque esto será fuero para ti, y fuero para tus hijos, de las ofrendas encendidas al SEÑOR, pues que así me ha sido mandado

14 Comeréis asimismo en lugar limpio, tú y tus hijos y tus hijas contigo, el pecho de la mecida, y la espaldilla elevada, porque por fuero para ti, y fuero para tus hijos, son dados de los sacrificios de la paz de los hijos de Israel

15 Con las ofrendas de los sebos que se han de encender, traerán la espaldilla que se ha de elevar, y el pecho que será mecido, para que lo mezas por ofrenda de mecedura delante del SEÑOR; y será por fuero perpetuo tuyo, y de tus hijos contigo, como el SEÑOR lo ha mandado

16 Y Moisés demandó el macho cabrío del pecado, y se halló que era quemado; y se enojó contra Eleazar e Itamar, los hijos de Aarón que habían quedado, diciendo

17 ¿Por qué no comisteis de la expiación del pecado en el lugar santo? Porque es santísimo, y la dio él a vosotros para llevar la iniquidad de la congregación, para que sean reconciliados delante del SEÑOR

18 Veis que su sangre no fue metida en el santuario de adentro; habíais de comerla en el lugar santo, como yo mandé

19 Y respondió Aarón a Moisés: He aquí hoy han ofrecido su pecado y su holocausto delante del SEÑOR; con todo eso me han acontecido estas cosas; pues si comiera yo hoy de la expiación del pecado, ¿Hubiera sido acepto al SEÑOR

20 Y Moisés oyó esto, y lo aceptó

Levítico 10 Commentary

Chapter 10

The sin and death of Nadab and Abihu. (1,2) Aaron and his sons forbidden to mourn for Nadab and Abihu. (3-7) Wine forbidden to the priests when in the service of the tabernacle. (8-11) Of eating the holy things. (12-20)

Verses 1-2 Next to Moses and Aaron, none were more likely to be honourable in Israel than Nadab and Abihu. There is reason to think that they were puffed up with pride, and that they were heated with wine. While the people were prostrate before the Lord, adoring his presence and glory, they rushed into the tabernacle to burn incense, though not at the appointed time; both together, instead of one alone, and with fire not taken from the altar. If it had been done through ignorance, they had been allowed to bring a sin-offering. But the soul that doeth presumptuously, and in contempt of God's majesty and justice, that soul shall be cut off. The wages of sin is death. They died in the very act of their sin. The sin and punishment of these priests showed the imperfection of that priesthood from the very beginning, and that it could not shelter any from the fire of God's wrath, otherwise than as it was typical of Christ's priesthood.

Verses 3-7 The most quieting considerations under affliction are fetched from the word of God. What was it that God spake? Though Aaron's heart must have been filled with anguish and dismay, yet with silent submission he revered the justice of the stroke. When God corrects us or ours for sin, it is our duty to accept the punishment, and say, It is the Lord, let him do what seemeth him good. Whenever we worship God, we come nigh unto him, as spiritual priests. This ought to make us very serious in all acts of devotion. It concerns us all, when we come nigh to God, to do every religious exercise, as those who believe that the God with whom we have to do, is a holy God. He will take vengeance on those that profane his sacred name by trifling with him.

Verses 8-11 Do not drink wine or strong drink. During the time they ministered, the priests were forbidden it. It is required of ( 1 Timothy. 3:3 ) is, Lest ye die; die when ye are in drink. The danger of death, to which we are continually exposed, should engage all to be sober.

Verses 12-20 Afflictions should rather quicken us to our duty, than take us from it. But our unfitness for duty, when it is natural and not sinful, will have great allowances made for it; God will have mercy, and not sacrifice. Let us profit by the solemn warning this history conveys. When professing worshippers come with zeal without knowledge, carnal affections, earthly, light, vain, trifling thoughts, the devices of will-worship, instead of the offering of soul and spirit; then the incense is kindled by a flame which never came down from heaven, which the Spirit of a holy God never sent within their hearts.
