Nehemías 4

1 Y fue que cuando oyó Sanbalat que nosotros edificábamos el muro, se encolerizó y se enojó en gran manera, e hizo escarnio de los judíos

2 Y habló delante de sus hermanos y del ejército de Samaria, y dijo: ¿Qué hacen estos débiles judíos? ¿Les han de permitir? ¿Han de sacrificar? ¿Han de acabar en tiempo? ¿Han de resucitar de los montones del polvo las piedras que fueron quemadas

3 Y estaba junto a él Tobías amonita, el cual dijo: Aun lo que ellos edifican, si subiere una zorra derribará su muro de piedra

4 Oye, oh Dios nuestro, que somos en menosprecio, y vuelve el baldón de ellos sobre su cabeza, y dalos en despojo en la tierra de su cautiverio

5 Y no cubras su iniquidad, ni su pecado sea raído delante de tu rostro; porque se airaron contra los que edificaban

6 Mas edificamos el muro, y toda la muralla fue junta hasta su mitad; y el pueblo tuvo ánimo para obrar

7 Y acaeció que oyendo Sanbalat, Tobías, los árabes, los amonitas, y los de Asdod, que se había puesto remedio a los muros de Jerusalén, porque ya los portillos comenzaban a cerrarse, se encolerizaron mucho

8 y conspiraron todos a una para venir a combatir a Jerusalén, y a hacerle daño

9 Entonces oramos a nuestro Dios, y por causa de ellos pusimos guarda de día y de noche sobre los que edificaban

10 Y dijo Judá: Las fuerzas de los acarreadores se han debilitado, y el escombro es mucho, y no podemos edificar el muro

11 Y nuestros enemigos dijeron: No sepan, ni vean, hasta que entremos en medio de ellos, y los matemos, y hagamos cesar la obra

12 Pero sucedió, que cuando vinieron los judíos que habitaban entre ellos, nos dieron aviso diez veces de todos los lugares de donde volvían a nosotros

13 Entonces puse por los bajos del lugar, detrás del muro, y en las alturas de los peñascos, puse el pueblo por familias con sus espadas, con sus lanzas, y con sus arcos

14 Después miré, y me levanté, y dije a los principales y a los magistrados, y al resto del pueblo: No temáis delante de ellos; acordaos del Señor grande y terrible, y pelead por vuestros hermanos, por vuestros hijos y por vuestras hijas, por vuestras mujeres y por vuestras casas

15 Y sucedió que cuando oyeron nuestros enemigos que lo habíamos entendido, Dios disipó el consejo de ellos, nos volvimos todos al muro, cada uno a su obra

16 Mas fue que desde aquel día la mitad de los jóvenes trabajaban en la obra, y la otra mitad de ellos tenía lanzas escudos, arcos, y cotas; y los príncipes estaban tras toda la casa de Judá

17 Los que edificaban en el muro, y los que llevaban cargas y los que cargaban, con una mano trabajaban en la obra, y en la otra tenían su arma

18 Porque los que edificaban, cada uno tenía su espada ceñida a sus lomos, y así edificaban y el que tocaba el shofar estaba junto a mí

19 Y dije a los principales, y a los magistrados y al resto del pueblo: La obra es grande y larga, y nosotros estamos apartados en el muro, lejos los unos de los otros

20 En el lugar donde oyereis la voz del shofar, reuníos allí con nosotros; nuestro Dios peleará por nosotros

21 Y nosotros trabajábamos en la obra; y la mitad de ellos tenían lanzas desde la subida del alba hasta que salían las estrellas

22 También dije entonces al pueblo: Cada uno con su criado se quede dentro de Jerusalén, y hágannos de noche centinela, y de día a la obra

23 Y ni yo, ni mis hermanos, ni mis siervos, ni la gente de guardia que me seguía, desnudamos nuestro vestido; cada uno se desnudaba solamente para lavarse

Nehemías 4 Commentary

Chapter 4

Opposition of Sanballat and others. (1-6) The designs of the adversaries. (7-15) Nehemiah's precautions. (16-23)

Verses 1-6 Many a good work has been looked upon with contempt by proud and haughty scorners. Those who disagree in almost every thing, will unite in persecution. Nehemiah did not answer these fools according to their folly, but looked up to God by prayer. God's people have often been a despised people, but he hears all the slights that are put upon them, and it is their comfort that he does so. Nehemiah had reason to think that the hearts of those sinners were desperately hardened, else he would not have prayed that their sins might never be blotted out. Good work goes on well, when people have a mind to it. The reproaches of enemies should quicken us to our duty, not drive us from it.

Verses 7-15 The hindering good work is what bad men aim at, and promise themselves success in; but good work is God's work, and it shall prosper. God has many ways of bringing to light, and so of bringing to nought, the devices and designs of his church's enemies. If our enemies cannot frighten us from duty, or deceive us into sin, they cannot hurt us. Nehemiah put himself and his cause under the Divine protection. It was the way of this good man, and should be our way. All his cares, all his griefs, all his fears, he spread before God. Before he used any means, he made his prayer to God. Having prayed, he set a watch against the enemy. If we think to secure ourselves by prayer, without watchfulness, we are slothful, and tempt God; if by watchfulness, without prayer, we are proud, and slight God: either way, we forfeit his protection. God's care of our safety, should engage and encourage us to go on with vigour in our duty. As soon as a danger is over, let us return to our work, and trust God another time.

Verses 16-23 We must watch always against spiritual enemies, and not expect that our warfare will be over till our work is ended. The word of God is the sword of the Spirit, which we ought to have always at hand, and never to have to seek for it, either in our labours, or in our conflicts, as Christians. Every true Christian is both a labourer and a soldier, working with one hand, and fighting with the other. Good work is likely to go on with success, when those who labour in it, make a business of it. And Satan fears to assault the watchful Christian; or, if attacked, the Lord fights for him. Thus must we wait to the close of life, never putting off our armour till our work and warfare are ended; then we shall be welcomed to the rest and joy of our Lord.

This chapter relates, how the Jews, while building, were mocked by their enemies, to which no answer was returned but by prayer to God, and they went on notwithstanding in their work, Ne 4:1-6 and how that their enemies conspired against them, to hinder them by force of arms, Ne 4:7-12 to oppose which, both spiritual and temporal weapons were made use of, so that the work was still carried on, Ne 4:13-23.
